Horses Rescued From B.C. Mountainside

Two horses that were trapped on the side of a B.C. mountain are now safe and recovering at a ranch near province’s border with Alberta.  The starving horses were found by two snowmobilers  before Christmas.    It was clear to the guys that this was a life or death situation.  They feared that the horses were much to weak to make it down the mountain and even under the best of circumstances, the snow was too deep.  They had to make a decision should they put the horses down which at the time seemed like the most humane thing to do.  Their hearts said “no!”  These horses were fighters they found the strength to hang on and deserved a chance at life.  With the help of their families, their friends and volunteers, they headed to the mountain to begin digging a trench so that they could free the horses.  A town of true heroes stood by cheering late Tuesday night 12-23-08 as  the two horses reached the end of the path and were loaded on a horses trailer and driven to safety.

They have frostbite, they are severely underweight and have lost hair due to rain scald.  It was believed they had been trapped for a couple of weeks.  The question remained how could anyone have left them behind.

Finally they got their answer…The horses owner who ask that he not be identified (wonder why) had been using the horses to take supplies to hikers  (there were three, one of which was not found), when he became separated from them.  He claims he went back to the mountain three times to find the horses.  He wants to bring Belle and Sundance back to his farm however, the B.C. Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Animals has seized the animals while they conduct an investigation to determine whether the owner took the necessary precautions to ensure the horses wouldn’t suffer.

Chief animal protection officer reported that:  “Once our investigation is completed, if the elements of an offense have been met, which by all accounts at this point looks like it has been, charges would be forwarded to Crown.”

See the faces of these true heroes who came together and may this story bring you Inspiration and Hope for a Safe and Prosperous New Year…  More of Gallery next page
