Nicanors First Race Finish
All eyes were on Barbaro’s little brother Nicanor today as he ran his first race ever at Gulfstream Park in Florida. Unfortunately, Nicanor’s debut wasn’t one to remember.
The 3-year-old full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro finished 10th in a one-mile maiden race. His finish wasn’t an encouraging step toward what his many hoped would be a journey into this year’s Triple Crown races.
Nicanor was ridden by Jockey Edgar Prado, who was aboard Barbaro three years ago, when he suffered his carreer and life ending injury.
Nicanor broke slowly and appear to almost stumble at the start. He then recovered and settled into the rail and made a move near the half-mile mark but never got close to the lead. After passing the half-mile pole, Prado moved Nicanor off the rail a bit, trying to find a hole, but one never opened.
The second anniversary of Barbaro’s death was Jan. 29, which made Nicanor’s debut come at a bittersweet time for Prado, Matz. and the Jacksons.
