American Journalist Roxana Saberi Eight Years For Espionage

Roxana Saberi a 31-year-old American freelance journalist and American-Iranian citizen, was convicted of spying and sentenced to eight years in prison by an Iranian court Saturday April 18, 2009.
The sentencing has plunged Washington into a fresh crisis with Tehran, damaging hopes for Barack Obama’s reconciliation bid with the Islamic regime.
A White House spokesman said that President Obama was “deeply disappointed” by the sentence and quoted Obama as saying: “What we think is important is that the situation be remedied, we will continue to express the concerns that we have.”
The website Times Online reported that Washington is expected to make its position clear to the Iranians via the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, which represents US interests.
