Cape Cod: Great White Shark Sightings Cause Swimming Ban
Associated Press: The sightings of several great white sharks have prompted a swimming ban for the rest of the Labor Day weekend at some oceanside beaches in Massachusetts.
Officials at North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, South Beach and Hardings Beach in Chatham and Nauset Beach in Orleans put up red “no swimming” signs after a shark expert with the state Division of Marine Fisheries spotted four great whites off Chatham’s coast Saturday.

Great White Sharks Cause Stir on Cape Cod
Great white sharks , one of the ocean’s greatly depleted predatory species , tend to cause a stir any time they show up near populated places, and that was certainly the case on eastern Cape Cod this weekend. Marine biologists for the state of Massachusetts, working with a commercial fisherman who is a talented swordfish harpooner, tagged two of several 8-to 10-foot great white sharks spotted in waters off the eastern shore of the Cape. Previously, only one great white shark had been successfully tagged in the Atlantic Ocean. The photo specialist above was taken by Gregory Skomal of the state Division of Marine Fisheries, who has become the go to shark specialist in the region. As a precaution, ocean beaches around Chatham were to remain closed to swimmers through the weekend. Basking Shark Washes Ashore On A Long Island Beach
A foot long basking shark washed ashore on Gilgo Beach in Long Island.
The shark was discovered on Tuesday and New York State Park official George Gorman says the shark appeared to die of an illness. An examination is being done to determine the cause of death. Once determined it will be buried in a nearby sand dune.
