According to the website of local newspaper the Straits Times, Singaporeans felt their world literally move about 6:15 p.m. local time when aftershocks from a powerful Indonesian earthquake hit the island.

Strong earthquake hits Indonesia

Buildings in Singapore’s Toa Payoh, Woodlands, Bukit Timah and the eastern parts of Singapore like Simei and Kembangan shook, scaring some residents. Some residents report that the tremors lasted for some two to three minutes.

There were currently no reports of injuries or deaths here.

An earthquake with magnitude of 7.6 jolted Indonesia’s West Sumatra province at Sumatra Island on Wednesday.

Some buildings destroyed

A POWERFUL 7.9-magnitude quake struck off Indonesia’s Sumatra island Wednesday, destroying large buildings and starting fires in the major city of Padang, geologists and reports said.

‘A number of hotels in Padang have been destroyed,’ Indonesian geophysics and meteorology agency tsunami warning head Rahmat Triyono said, adding the agency did not release a tsunami alert.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii however issued a tsunami watch for Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand. ‘Up to now we haven’t been able to reach Padang, communications have been cut,’ Mr Triyono said.  Read full story here
