Mark Ingram’s Father
The 2009 Heisman Trophy Presentation took place last night at the Nokia Theater in New York City. It was truly a heartfelt moment when University of Alabama, sophmore, Mark Ingram’s name was announced.
This is the first time ever that a Alabama player has received the most prestigious award in college football.
Ingram has amassed impressive numbers this year at Alabama. So far the totals are 1,542 yards rushing with him still have to play the BCS championship game. The Alabama team is undefeated so far this season.
Among those candidates included former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy from Texas, Toby Gerhart from Stanford and Nebraska’s defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh

Running back Toby Gerhart received the second highest votes.
Ingram accepted the honor with great pride giving credit to his team as well. His emotional speech touched the hearts of many as he thanked God, his coach, friends and family. It was a proud moment however, there was one person who couldn’t be there, his father.
Mark Ingram Sr. who was a wide receiver with the New York Giants, who made the play that helped turn the tide in Super Bowl XXV.
Ingram spent six seasons with the Giants. He also played for Miami, Green Bay and Philadelphia in his 10-year career.
The elder Ingram, 43, is in the Queens (N.Y.) Correctional Center awaiting sentencing for failing to report to federal prison last year after being convicted of money laundering and bank fraud.
Ingram the first Alabama player to win the Heisman Trophy – credits his father for developing his athletic skills.
Heisman Trophy Winners
A first-round draft pick in 1987, Ingram made almost $1 million a year during his NFL career, but he filed for bankruptcy in 2000. One year later, he was sentenced to six months in federal prison after he was caught with $3,290 in counterfeit money. In 2004, he served a year in jail after pleading guilty to stealing a credit card from a golf course in his hometown of Flint, Mich.
Alabama coach Nick Saban was an assistant coach at Michigan State when the elder Ingram played there, and that relationship helped him recruit the son who was a hotly pursued high school star in Grand Blanc, Mich.
In 2008, Ingram was sentenced to 92 months in prison for bank fraud. At sentencing, he asked the judge to postpone his prison term so he could watch his son finish his freshman season at Alabama. The judge refused and ordered him to report to prison in December.
When Ingram failed to report, he was arrested by U.S. Marshals on Jan. 2, the same day his son played in the Sugar Bowl against Utah. Ingram could now be facing up to a decade in prison. Read full story here
