Originally titled the “Tournament East-West football game,” the first Rose Bowl  was played on January 1, 1902, starting the tradition of New Year’s Day bowl games. The inaugural game featured Fielding Yost’ dominating 1901 Michigan team, representing the East, which crushed a previously 3-1-2 team from Stanford University  representing the West, by a score of 49–0 after Stanford quit in the third quarter. Michigan finished the season 11–0 and was considered the national champion. Yost had been Stanford’s coach the previous year. The game was so lopsided that for the next 15 years, the Tournament of Roses officials ran chariot races, ostrich races, and other various events instead of football. But, on New Year’s Day 1916 football returned to stay as The State College of Washington defeated Brown University in the first annual Rose Bowl.  Read more here

As of the 2009 season, Bowden was one of four active coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as coaches along with Chris Ault, Joe Paterno and John Gagliardi.

The first All-American Bowl, played in Birmingham, Alabama in 1977, was won 17-7 by which school?

Maryland. Schools from the modern-day Atlantic Coast Conference won five All-American Bowls during its run from 1977 to 1990. Maryland won the very first game. Georgia Tech (1985), Florida State (1986), Virginia (1987), and NC State (1990) were the other schools to win. West Virginia won the 1983 contest. Minnesota’s only appearance was in 1977. Iowa never made an appearance. This game was typically played in late December, and was played on New Year’s Eve four times.

About Bobby Bowden: he was head coach at Howard College (now known as Samford University, currently in the FCS football division) in Birmingham, Alabama from 1954–1955  Samford from 1959-62, led West Virginia from 1970-75 and took over at Florida State the next season.  Read more here
