America’s most famous filly fizzled out and now the most anticipated race of the year is no sure thing.

NEW ORLEANSThis was supposed to be an exhibition for Rachel Alexandra, an opportunity for the reigning Horse of the Year to take a lap before an adoring public.

She would clear her lungs, limber her muscles and take another important step toward a showdown with the undefeated mare Zenyatta next month in Arkansas.

The public did, indeed, come to adore, more than 12,000 fans packed the Fair Grounds, a track nestled in a historic neighborhood. They craned their necks to glimpse Rachel Alexandra and roared like their favorite Mardi Gras float had just appeared when she stepped on the racetrack for the $200,000 New Orleans Ladies Stakes.   Read more next page

Then the gates popped open, and the good times this town is known for did not exactly roll. Calvin Borel bounced Rachel Alexandra into a comfortable stalking position behind Fighter Wing for three-quarters of a mile, and then pressed the button for that finishing gear that had been so money in her eight straight victories as a 3-year-old last year.
