Venomous Stonefish of Australia
The most venomous fish in all the oceans subsides in the waters surrounding Australia.
The stonefish is a relatively unimposing creature at about 10 inches long, awkward in its movements, and intentionally evasive. With that said, the sting of a stonefish can kill a grown man within a matter of minutes.
Stonefish are found in various water depths, from tidal pools to 120 feet of ocean. The stonefish’s ultimately perfected camouflage makes it all but impossible to see. When lying still this fish looks deceptively like any rock (or “stone”) decorating the sea bottom.
The stonefish has developed a highly efficient form of protection, and its back is lined with a row of 13 spikes that deliver a sting with the least provocation. Unsuspecting swimmers, divers and waders are the most susceptible and stonefish spikes will penetrate foot wear, clothing and wet suit material. Read more here
