Rodney King, 47, the man whose name is best know to most for being in the center of the infamous 1992 Los Angeles riots was found dead today at his Rialito, CA residence.
According to reports…Police in Rialto received a 911 call from Cynthia Kelly, King’s fiance at about 5:25 am. She reported that she found King in the swimming pool. Upon there arrival, the responding officer removed him from the pool and attempted to revive him. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
King had been drinking and smoking marijuana on the night of his death.
On March 1991, King was pulled over by the LAPD for suspicion of drunk driving. It was then that he became a victim of police brutality after her was savagely beaten by four members of the department.
In 1992, the officers who had been charged with use of excessive force were tried for the brutal beating in state court. Three were acquitted and the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the fourth officer. The acquittal was felt throughout the country and sparked the 1992 riots.
King is survived by three children and his fiance, Cynthia Kelley. The two were engaged back in September of 2010.
On April 12, 2012, King released a statement to the media regarding the Trayvon Martin shooting. King said he was “grieving for Trayvon Martin” and stated how the scream on the audio of George Zimmerman’s 911 call reminded him of his own screaming during his beating by the LAPD.
