Tulane University safety Devon Walker, who suffered a fractured cervical vertebrae during Saturdays game against Tulsa…is said to be “alert” and “responsive” following surgery on Sunday.
Tulane’s director of sports medicine Dr. Rick Dickson reported that Walker is listed in stable condition and recovering in the intensive-care unit at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma following his a three hour surgical procedure to stabilize his spine.
Dickson said in a statement that it was still too soon to draw any conclusions about Devon Walker’s prognosis. Dickson reported that Walker can speak but did not comment on whether he is able to move.
“When the neurosurgeons here at Saint Francis have more definitive information, they will co-consult” with the team’s doctor. Until then, Dickson said, there will be “constant monitoring, care and attention” for Walker.
Walker is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology was injured after a helmet-to-helmet hit with a teammate during the final play of the first half Tulane’s game Saturday with Tulsa.
