Watching college football yesterday was like being at a tennis match or seeing Arena football in person. Back and forth, up and down, big play after big play! Over the last several years, defenses have dominated the game of football. With all of the recent rule changes plus the offensive gurus finally figuring out how to attack defenses, we are now seeing a shift in the way the game is played. On offense you are seeing zone reads, zone blocking schemes, no huddle offenses, all plays called at the line of scrimmage, west coast offenses, short quick passes…all offensive schemes to confuse the “D” and not allow them to make personnel changes to various situations. You may now see teams run 90 offensive plays per game! The defense does not have time to react anymore nor can they make substitutions without burning a timeout. Here are some of the ridiculous scores from yesterday: Oregon 51-Washington State 26, W.Va. 70-Baylor 63, Miami 44-NC State 37, Texas A&M 58-Arkansas 10, Tulsa 49-UAB 42, Purdue 51-Marshall 41, Georgia 51-Tennessee 44, LA Monroe 63-Tulane 10,
Clemson 54-BC 31, UNC 66-Idaho 0, LA Tech 44 Virginia 38, Texas 41- OK State 36, and Oregon State 38- Arizona 35. Lee Corso yesterday on Gameday said that in the West Virginia game, the first team to 50 wins. Not so fast my friend…the first team to 70 wins! What if West Virginia played Clemson yesterday? The final score may have been West Virginia 105 and Clemson 77. And then there is the woeful glacier Big 10 – Ohio State 17 and Michigan State 16. Without getting into defensive stats, there are some quality defenses out there. Notre Dame, BYU, Stanford, and Kansas State have all shown they can control the game. And how about ‘BAMA? Think Nick Saban and the boys would allow anyone to hang 50 on them??
Notes…..Is this the most boring Heisman year ever? It was a given on day 1 that QB Matt Barkley of USC was going to walk away with it. After a weak performance versus Stanford a few weeks ago, the Heisman race was wide open. The Honey Badger of LSU had a……pipe dream about winning the Heisman. Enter Geno Smith of West Virginia and congratulations, you are this years winner of the Heisman Trophy after your 8 TD performance yesterday. Don’t look now but Northwestern is 5-0. Was Bobby Petrino really that good of a coach? Penn State should be 4-1. Will QB Denard Robinson of Michigan be a first round selection in the NFL draft as a …..wide receiver? Without a doubt, the Big 12 is the second best conference in America! Has Coach Brian Kelly of ND mellowed a little bit this year?
It is early still, but, the BCS Championship game is setting up for Alabama versus Florida State. The schedules for LSU, Oregon, Georgia, South Carolina,
West Virginia, Notre Dame, Texas, and Kansas State may just be too tough to overcome with many of these teams having to play each other. The ACC is putrid and FSU will have a cake walk the rest of the way.
LSU has to play South Carolina, Florida, and Alabama. Texas, West Virginia, K State, and Oklahoma all have to play each other. Oregon has to play USC ( probably twice ) and Stanford. Notre Dame has to play Oklahoma, USC, and Stanford. South Carolina has Georgia, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, and Clemson left on their schedule. Georgia has South Carolina and Florida left to play. I know things can change quickly with just 1 upset along the way and it is going to be a GREAT finish to an already GREAT season!
