College Football 2012 – A Mid Season Report Card

Now that we are at the half way point to the 2012 season, it’s time to hand out some grades. It’s been a wild ride so far and it will continue to drive fans crazy, hopefully crazy enough to help the NCAA knuckleheads make the necessary changes to give us……a true playoff system!

College Football Report Card

How about 10 – 12 teams conferences? How about 2 – 6 team divisions in each conference? How about every conference having a championship game and the winners advances to the “Big Dance”? Oops – can’t use that phrase…..we already have that with one of the great spectacles in all of sports…March Madness!! I guess it would be too difficult to match that drama! WRONG!! How about having the qualifying teams that DON’T make the playoffs compete in the current BOWL game structure? Sorry, I was just dreaming…….Let me get back to reality!

A+. Alabama. For all you SEC haters out there, it didn’t take long for your pipe dream of a shift in power to the Left Coast to go up in smoke. USC flinches and the Tide rolls in to #1. Like ‘em or hate ‘em, Nick Saban can flat out coach and you don’t want to give him 4 weeks to prepare for a game ( see LSU last year ).

A+. Notre Dame. The Irish have been a non-factor for several years. I said it on the day that Brian Kelly was hired, leave him alone and give him 2 years, and he will turn that program around. If they keep winning……can you say Notre Dame vs. ???? in the BCS National Championship game? Stout defense ( not too many teams can say that this year ), a good ground attack, and now 2 QB’s that know their roles. Hmmmm….a recipe for success?

A+ South Carolina. The ‘Ol Ball Coach, in the twilight of his career, may be doing his best coaching ever. Long the doormat of the SEC East, the Gamecocks have been on a roll the last few years. Two years ago they lost in the SEC championship game and last year they were the best team in the East again but one upset and Georgia’s soft schedule left them on the outside looking in. Last week they pummeled Georgia and if they can survive the next few weeks, we may see the Gamecocks vs. the Tide in the SEC championship this year. We know how their last meeting turned out!!!!

A+. Geno Smith. The West Virginia QB should be given the Heisman Trophy right now. Cleary he is the best player in America and it will be very interesting to see if K State or Oklahoma has the “D” to stop him. The Mountaineers can score quickly and often, but, can they stop anyone? Wht’s going to happen when the weather gets cold, the ball gets heavy and slippery, and the defenses catch up with this offense? Great story lines to follow.

A’s. Kansas State, Penn State, Louisville, Ohio, Florida, Oregon State, Ohio State, Rutgers, Cincinnati, The BYU defense, Mississippi State, Stanford ( everyone thought they would fade away without Andrew Luck ).

B’s. Boise State – they may not lose again this year! Oregon – I just don’t respect their schedule. Baylor – nice job hanging in there without RG III. The Big 12 for being the second best conference in America. Northwestern and Duke…seriously…they both are 5-1?????

C’s. Georgia and FSU – they teased ya’ll, didn’t they?

D’s. Or, lack of defense. Clemson ( can’t stop anyone ), West Virginia ( first team to 70 wins ), Texas ( thought they may return to prominence ), the Big 10 conference, the ACC conference, Virginia Tech ( bet you didn’t see that coming this year ), Wisconsin, Michigan, the LSU offense.

Dream games I’d like to see this season:

West Virginia vs. Clemson

Alabama vs. Oregon

Kansas State vs. Florida

USC vs. Georgia

LSU vs. Stanford

Ohio State vs. Oklahoma

FSU vs. Texas

Louisville vs. Mississippi State

And for the BCS National Championship…..drum roll please…..South Carolina vs. Notre Dame!!

It’s fun to dream sometimes!!
