All we heard all week long was how Boomer Sooner was going to dismantle the Irish and put an end to their dream season. The Talking Heads all had ND as a 2 touchdown dog and not giving them any chance to go into Norman against “Big Game Bob”. Well, “Big Game Brian” and the ever so focused Fighting Irish looked like Hurricane Sandy as they swept through the Midwest by storm and surgically took apart Sooner Nation! The Irish played “Big Boy” football as they controlled the line of scrimmage and red-shirt freshman QB Everett Golson played like a poised veteran and came up with several critical 3rd down conversions to lead the often criticized offense to victory. Their defense gave up a lot of underneath passing yards but in the red zone, they locked up Landry Jones and the Sooner running game. Manti Te’o played like a Heisman hopeful needs to play in big games and has now solidified himself as the number 2 contender for college footballs most prestigious award.
What a sickening scene in Columbia, South Carolina yesterday as star running back Marcus Lattimore went down in the second quarter with a gruesome leg injury. It just tears your heart apart that the young man had to work so hard to get back on the field this year after last year’s devastating knee injury, for it to happen again. I truly applaud the sportsmanship shown by BOTH teams ( the Tennessee faithful should be proud of their young men ) as they surrounded Marcus as he lie in agony on the field. That just goes to show you the respect everyone has for this outstanding young man and for what he means to the sport of college football. Tweets came in from all around the country from supporters and well wishers shortly after the injury and we can only hope Marcus has a speedy recovery. No matter what happens from this point forward, Mr. Lattimore will be successful in the bigger game – the game of life!

More notes from week 9. Four more undefeated teams go down as Ohio, Oregon State, Mississippi State, and Rutgers lose for the first time while Louisville barely escaped to remain undefeated. Texas pulls one out against….lowly Kansas. Florida fumbled and bumbled all over the field ( just like South Carolina did against them last week ) to hand the SEC East crown to Georgia. Once again, Georgia can’t beat South Carolina but benefits from the easiest schedule in the East to advance to the SEC championship game. Boise State wins for the seventh time in a row! Duke had their bubble burst at FSU but is still a great story this year. Missouri finally gets their first SEC victory. Bet they didn’t think it was going to be that hard!! Hey Michigan nation, Arizona wants to thank you for running Rich Rod out of town. What has happened to the state of Colorado football? Weren’t you once a top program contending for championships? And ’Bama keeps rolling….. And Oregon plays no one…..
Coaches on the “Hot Seat”. Let’s start with Mack Brown of Texas. The once mighty Longhorns have fallen off over the last few years and how much longer will they put up with this inept defense? Mack may be the governor of the state, but, he better start winning – now and BIG or he will be out of office! Gene Chizek of Auburn. He rode the coat tails of SCam Newton to a national championship and a fat contract but has fallen on hard times since then. With the Crimson Tide “owning” the state of Alabama now, the folks from Auburn won’t put up with this mediocrity much longer. I smell a HUGE buy-out coming soon! John L. Smith of Arkansas. This has been a season long disaster for Arkansas with the Bobby Petrino scandal, the Smith hiring / bankruptcy issue, and all of their injuries. The Hogs were a pre-season Top 10 program. This isn’t going to end very well for Coach Smith. Derek Dooley of Tennessee. Coach Dooley was put in a very bad place from the start replacing the hated Lane Kiffin who had just replaced Phillip Fulmer. The program was under a ton of scrutiny and the cupboards were bare. Even though Coach Dooley is 1-14 in SEC league play, he truly deserves one more year and hopefully the Vol nation sees this also.
On the other side, coaches that are having great years and deserve all of the accolades include: Bill Snyder ( Kansas State ), Frank Solich ( Ohio ), Charlie Strong ( Louisville ), Brian Kelly ( Notre Dame ), Chris Peterson ( Boise State ), David Cutcliff ( Duke ), Dan Mullen ( Mississippi State ), Will Muschamp ( Florida ), Pat Fitzgerald ( Northwestern ). How can you not include Nick Saban for the Coach of the Year? These are just some of the men that won’t have to worry about where their next paycheck will be coming from!

It is going to be electric in Baton Rouge on Saturday night as the Tigers host their dreaded division rival from Alabama. Not only is the SEC West title on the line, but a potential BCS National Championship game is with in reach of this game’s winner. Finally, Oregon will play someone in a meaningful game. The Trojans have their backs against the wall and we will see how they respond after yesterday’s debacle. How will the Irish bounce back after their much hyped game against Oklahoma? What if Alabama, Oregon, and K State all go down?? Notre Dame #1??? WOW – what a year it has been and so much more to come!!!! It all comes down to Saturday!
