Derek Dooley Fired as University of Tennessee Head Coach

click Derek Dooley has been fired as the head football coach and will not be on the sidelines when the Volunteers take on the Kentucky Wildcats next Saturday November 24th.  Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will serve as the interim coach for that game.

source url Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart believes Derek Dooley improved Tennessee football during his 3-year tenure as the Volunteers’ coach.

In a statement released by the school Dooley said…”I am sorry we could not generate enough wins to create hope for a brighter future.

Although progress was not reflected in our record, I am proud of the strides we made to strengthen the foundation for future success in all areas of the program.”

Dooley leaves Tennessee with a 4-19 record in SEC play, only one bowl appearance and no winning seasons. He was hired from Louisiana Tech after Lane Kiffin left to take the coaching job at USC.

ABOUT Derek Dooley:

He served as the head football coach at Louisiana Tech University from 2007 to 2009, and the University of Tennessee from 2010 to 2012, compiling a career college football record of 32–41. He is the son of former University of Georgia head football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley.

September 2010, On Derek Dooley: I thought Derek Dooley was a very good choice for the University of Tennessee head football coaching position when it was open. I thought he was a very good selection. I know Derek very well. I’ve known him since he was a kid.

I mentioned him when (Lane) Kiffin left, I mentioned him to some very prominent people who were involved in the hiring process. I mentioned him and (former Tampa Bay coach and one-time Tennessee graduate assistant) Jon Gruden.

[Dooley] is not only knowledgeable, he has good solid football background and he was raised up with a good family.

Derek has got a challenge ahead of him and I’m confident he’ll get it done!
