It was an emotional day for the Kansas City Chiefs despite their 27-21 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Family, friends, teammates and the Chiefs franchise morn the the loss of Jovan Belcher and Kasandra Perkins.
Belcher, a 25 year old linebacker for the Chiefs killed Perkins…his twenty-two-year-old girlfriend Saturday morning, and then drove to the Chiefs facility and took his own life as the teams general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel watched helplessly.
Reports about the relationship between Belcher and his Perkins have been conflicting…many people close to the couple had no indication that they had issues and were shocked…Others were aware of the strained relationship and knew that the couple had “been having a lot of problems. A source close to the couple described Belcher as being “on and off” which was marked by tension that had escalated after the birth of their daughter…three month old daughter.
Regardless of the circumstances…a sense of heartfelt sadness will hover over Arrowhead stadium for weeks to come. The images of Belcher taking his own life will be etched in the minds of the Chiefs head coach and general manager for years to come. As will the images in the mind of the victims mother who witness her daughter’s life being taken.
The details leading up to the tragedy are mere speculation and the truth may never be known…Aside from the tragedy of Jovan’s murder-suicide, the saddest piece of news surrounding this story is that he leaves behind a 2-year-old and 3-month-old baby girl, Zoey.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those effected by the tragedy created by Jovan Belcher.
