Man Who Cloned His Dog Won’t Obey Leash Laws
Gary Rintel loved his dog Astro, a short-haired collie/Great Pyrenees mix so much that when Astro passed away in 2006…he paid $140,000 to have his frozen DNA implanted into a donor egg to be placed into a surrogate. He cloned him into two more pooches…Cosmo and Retro. He also had a hat out of Astro’s fur …
Neighbors and park goers are terrified of the gentically-modified monsters, who they claim have been allowed to run wild terrorizing the Upper West Side.
Central Park mandates that dogs be on leashes between 9am and 9pm.
Rintel regularly takes the collies for three-hour walks through the park to chase after rats and squirrels.
- Rintel paid $140,000 to have his prize collie cloned
- Rintel was fined $2,000 last year after refusing to obey leash laws
- Neighbors complain the dogs chase other people’s pets and bite pedestrians
Area residents complain the “evil” dogs are left to roam Central Park without a leash, and are prone to attacking people.
Though there’s a leash law in New York City, Rintel – who also turned his beloved dog into a fur hat – admits he doesn’t pay it any heed and has paid $2,000 in tickets over the last year as he often lingers a block behind the dogs on walks.
Rintel, does not care about the law despite having to pay fines. He told sources…
‘If you were a dog, would you want to live with a rope around your neck?’ he asked. ‘I don’t think most people care about their dogs’ happiness. Sometimes I’m guilty of breaking that law.’ He went on to add: “They’re not threatening or dangerous dogs. They’re playful and they’re under check,” he said. “The idea that two dogs are savaging the Upper West Side isn’t true.”
According to sources…despite the fines and complaints…he will not put his dogs on a leash.
