Dr. Oz Defends Weight Loss Claims

Dr. Oz, Appeared before the Senate’s consumer protection panel on Tuesday,to answer questions about claims he made about weight-loss aids on his day time TV show. ‘The Dr. Oz Show‘.

Dr. Oz appeared before the Senate's consumer protection panel on Tuesday, Dr. Oz, acknowledged that his language about green coffee and other supplements has been ‘flowery’ and promised to publish a list of specific products he thinks can help America shed pounds and get healthy.

Dr. Oz testified before the Committee, defending his promotion of alternative medicine, stating that he takes great efforts to inform viewers that he neither sells nor endorses any supplements. He states that he created OzWatch as a way for viewers to report scams, which has received more than 35,000 complaints and issued 600 cease and desist letters.

Dr. Oz has faced harsh criticism due to images of him as well as quotes made by him  have been used in many weight loss product scams. During a Senate hearing on consumer protection, he was scolded by Senator Claire McCaskill  who stated that by airing segments on weight loss products that are later cited in advertisements, he plays a role, intentional or not, in perpetuating these scams, and that she is “concerned that you are melding medical advice, news, and entertainment in a way that harms consumers.”

 McCaskill told Dr. Oz,  that she gets that he does good things on his show however, she added ‘but I don’t get why you need to say this stuff because you know it’s not true.’

Mehmet Cengiz Öz also known as Dr Oz, is a Turkish-American cardiothoracic surgeon, author, and television personality.

Dr. Oz first appeared on the The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004, and later on Larry King Live and other TV programs. In 2009, The Dr. Oz Show, a daily television program focusing on medical issues and personal health was launched by Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures.

Dr. Oz, received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1982.  In 1986 he obtained MD and MBA degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Wharton School.

 FTC advises caution if  the weight loss ad claims the product

  • Causes weight loss of two pounds or more a week for a month or more without dieting or exercise;
  • Causes substantial weight loss no matter what or how much the consumer eats;
  • Causes permanent weight loss even after the consumer stops using the product;
  • Safely enables consumers to lose more than three pounds per week for more than four weeks;
  • Causes substantial weight loss for all users; or
  • Causes substantial weight loss by wearing a product on the body or rubbing it into the skin.
