John Murtha dies at 77; Pennsylvania Democrat forcefully opposed Iraq war in Congress
Rep. Murtha, the first Vietnam veteran to serve in Congress, called in 2005 for an immediate pullout of U.S. forces from Iraq. He also delivered billions in federal dollars to his home state.
John Murtha, the Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania and decorated former Marine whose fierce opposition to the Iraq war helped catalyze public sentiment against the conflict, died Monday. He was 77.
Murtha died at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., surrounded by his family, his office announced. He had been hospitalized for a little more than a week with complications from gallbladder surgery.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Donna; his sons, John and Patrick; and three grandchildren.
Although his turn against the war in 2005 made him a national figure, Murtha was known inside Washington for decades as the consummate behind-the-scenes deal maker, an old-line power broker and physically-imposing figure who unrepentantly delivered billions of federal dollars to his home state. Ex-baseball analyst Steve Phillips, whom ESPN fired last year when his extramarital affair with a network product staffer went public, may be the source of all the “Tiger Woods in rehab in Mississippi” leaks.
ESPN.com reports: Former ESPN baseball analyst and New York Mets general manager Steve Phillips said Monday that he knew he had a sex-addiction problem last August, two months before he was fired after having an affair with an ESPN production assistant.
A former Mets general manager, Phillips led the team to a 2000 World Series berth. But his six-year tenure with the Mets, from 1997-2003, was marred by another affair: The then-GM admitted to sleeping with a female team employee, Rosa Rodriguez, in 1998.
