Twelve killed in shooting rampage at Fort Hood army base

Reuters:Twelve people were killed and at least 31 were wounded when a soldier went on a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood U.S. Army base at Fort Hood Texas on Thursday, base commander Lieutenant-General Bob Cone said.
Cone told reporters at the base that the gunman was killed in the attack at the facility, the biggest military base in the world and a prime point of deployment for U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said in an interview with Fox News that she was told by military officials the gunman was an officer who had been about to be deployed to Iraq. Read full story here

Highlight: SAC State Shooting: Police report one dead.
A man beaten in a California State University, Sacramento dormitory room this afternoon has died, authorities announced in a news conference this evening.
His attacker, who was shot by campus police officers after the beating, remains in the hospital, authorities said. His condition is unknown.
Authorities have not released the identity of the men and have not said whether they are students at the university or whether they lived in the dorm. The relationship between the two men also is not known.
Addressing a throng of reporters, campus police Chief Dan Davis tried to assure worried students and parents that there is no ongoing threat to anyone on campus.
“I can tell you this was an isolated altercation that took place between two individuals,” one of whom is in the hospital and the other is dead, Davis said. “The campus is safe.” Read full story here

BOSTON — Mark Herzlich was coming off an incredible 2008 season, having emerged as one of the nation’s best college linebackers. It seemed all he had to worry about was whether he should turn pro or return to Boston College Eagles.

Herzlich stayed in school. He didn’t know what a great support system he’d just put in place.
This past spring, Herzlich, projected by many to be an early-round NFL draft pick if he had left school early, was back in Wayne, Pa., when he felt pain in his leg. He went for tests, then a biopsy: It was Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer found in bone or soft tissue. Read more here

ASSOCIATED PRESS: NEW YORK — Serena Williams was fined $10,000 Sunday for a profanity-laced tirade directed at a U.S. Open line judge, and an investigation is under way to determine whether there should be additional punishment.

The $10,000 penalty — not quite 3 percent of the $350,000 in prize money Williams earned by reaching the semifinals at Flushing Meadows — is the maximum on-site fine that can be issued for unsportsmanlike conduct at a Grand Slam tournament.
The U.S. Open said in a statement that the Grand Slam Committee Administrator will “determine if the behavior of Ms. Williams warrants consideration as a major offense for which additional penalties can be imposed.”
Williams, who was the defending champion, also was docked $500 for smashing her racket after the first set of what became a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Kim Clijsters on Saturday night.

Two points from losing in the second set, Williams faulted at 5-6, 15-30. On her second serve there, the line judge called a foot fault, making it 15-40 and giving Clijsters a match point. Williams began berating the line judge and a penalty point was awarded to Clijsters; because it happened to come on match point, it ended the semifinal. Read full story here
