America’s most famous filly fizzled out and now the most anticipated race of the year is no sure thing.
NEW ORLEANS — This was supposed to be an exhibition for Rachel Alexandra, an opportunity for the reigning Horse of the Year to take a lap before an adoring public.
She would clear her lungs, limber her muscles and take another important step toward a showdown with the undefeated mare Zenyatta next month in Arkansas.
The public did, indeed, come to adore, more than 12,000 fans packed the Fair Grounds, a track nestled in a historic neighborhood. They craned their necks to glimpse Rachel Alexandra and roared like their favorite Mardi Gras float had just appeared when she stepped on the racetrack for the $200,000 New Orleans Ladies Stakes. Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey meet Saturday night with the WBO Welterweight title on the line. The bout will take place at Cowboys Stadium.
Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey
Lenny DeJesus has been around boxing for over 40 years. In that time he has had many roles – amateur boxer, bucket boy, stool man, adviser and cut man. But he is a locksmith by trade.
So DeJesus, who lives in the Bronx, knows a thing or two about keys and locks. And he has drawn an assignment that will test all his skills – inside and outside the ring.
DeJesus will be working Joshua Clottey’s corner as his trainer when the former welterweight champion takes on Manny Pacquiao, the No. 1 “pound-for-pound” fighter, at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Saturday night.
It is the first fight for Manny Pacquiao since he beat Miguel Cotto in November.
He must find the right combination for Clottey (35-3, 21 KOs) against Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs), who has been unstoppable for the last two years. Compounding the difficulty, DeJesus was a late replacement when Clottey’s longtime trainer Godwin Kotey had trouble getting a visa to travel from Ghana to the U.S. Read full story here

HAMPTON, Ga. — Carl Edwards was 156 laps off the lead when he apparently decided it was time to settle a score with Brad Keselowski.
The result was a frightening crash that sent Keselowski’s car flying toward the stands at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and put NASCAR’s “have at it” philosophy to the test a mere four races into a season that was supposed to let the drivers show more aggression and emotion.
Will Edwards be suspended for what appeared to be an intentional bump of Keselowski at more than 190 mph? Or will NASCAR give the No. 99 a pass for merely taking its new mandate to the extreme?
“To come back and intentionally wreck someone, that’s not cool,” said Keselowski, who escaped Sunday’s crash unscathed. “You could have killed someone in the grandstands.”
After the crash, NASCAR ordered Edwards off the track. He drove defiantly around the quarter-mile track in front of the stands and went backward down the pit lane before meeting privately with series officials in their trailer.
The feud between Edwards and Keselowski boiled over with three laps to go in the Kobalt Tools 500, a race won by Kurt Busch but overshadowed by the shenanigans going on behind him. Read full story here

It’s impossible to be a benchmark program without getting some timely bench play.
Old Dominion got it when it counted most Sunday as it locked up the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season women’s title with a nail-biting 67-65 victory over host Virginia Commonwealth at the Siegel Center.
Reserve Jackie Cook’s give-and-go bucket off an inbounds pass with 52 seconds left proved to be the winner in a game that see-sawed in the second half.
Inbounding from in front of ODU’s bench, Cook hoped to get the ball into Shadasia Green’s hands. But when Green was covered, Cook found Jessica Canady open near the 3-point arc. When Cook’s defender turned her head, the freshman small forward bee-lined to the bucket. Read full story here

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was unable to celebrate his side’s vital 3-1 win at Stoke after teenager Aaron Ramsey suffered an horrific injury.
Ramsey was injured in the second half in a tackle with Ryan Shawcross, who was sent off and left the pitch in tears after seeing the extent of Ramsey’s injury.
”I’m proud of our game because it was an unbelievable battle from the first minute. We needed to be tough and resilient to win,” Wenger said. ”I’m very proud and of course very sad because of what happened. We know it’s a bad injury. We have to transfer him to London tonight to see if he needs emergency surgery. We don’t know how long he will be out but it’s certainly long term.
”I’m not very happy with the tackle. We know what we are expecting, a battle everywhere, but we have now lost three players on horrendous tackles and I refuse to believe it’s always coincidence. Read full ESPN story here
