Lab Technician Arrested in the Death of Yale Student Annie Le

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

New York Times Reported:  A lab technician was arrested early on Thursday and charged in the murder of Annie M. Le, a Yale graduate student whose body was hidden in the wall of a university building after she was strangled, the police in New Haven said.

The technician, Raymond Clark III, 24, was taken into custody at a Super 8 motel in Cromwell, Conn., after DNA evidence linked him to Ms. Le’s killing, the police said. He did not resist. Bail was set at $3 million, Chief James Lewis of the New Haven police said.

Chief Lewis would not provide a motive beyond saying: “It is important to note that this is not about urban crime, university crime, domestic crime but an issue of workplace violence, which is becoming a growing concern around the country.”  Read full story here

Richard C. Levin, the president of Yale, released a statement that echoed Chief Lewis’ comment describing the killing as work-place related. “This incident could have happened in any city, in any university, or in any workplace,” he said. “It says more about the dark side of the human soul than it does about the extent of security measures.”

Police are hoping to compare DNA taken from Raymond Clark’s hair, fingernails and saliva to more than 150 pieces of evidence collected from the crime scene where Annie Le’s body was found. That evidence may also be compared at a state lab with DNA samples given voluntarily from other people with access to the crime scene. Clark is seen here with fiancée Jennifer Hromadka. CNN Crime Reports:  Yale University graduate student Annie Le, whose body was found Sunday in the wall of a basement lab near the campus, was strangled (tramatic asphyxiation) to death, a spokesman for the Connecticut medical examiner’s office said Wednesday.

Lab Technician’s DNA Is Examined in Yale Killing

Earlier, a Yale employee was released from police custody after investigators detained him Tuesday night to collect DNA, said a spokeswoman for the city of New Haven.

Annie Le Case: Full Coverage

Police took Raymond Clark, 24, into custody after obtaining a search warrant for his home and a body warrant that allowed them to collect DNA samples as authorities probed Le’s death.

The student’s body was discovered in the basement wall of an off-campus medical research building on the day she was to have been married.

Clark, a technician, could have been arrested if he declined to provide DNA samples, but he was released after complying, said Jessica A. Mayorga, a spokeswoman for the city of New Haven.  Police vehicles were parked outside Clark’s home Tuesday in Middletown, Connecticut. Read more here

Annie Le Murder: Lab Techinian is a Suspect

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

ABC News:  A lab technician is emerging as a suspect in the murder of Yale graduate student Annie Le.

The technician, who has not been identified but reportedly worked in the same building with Le, reportedly has what appear to be defensive wounds on his chest, suggesting a violent struggle. Sources said the man failed a polygraph test.

Police denied that they have a suspect in the case but did say that no other students are involved and no one else is in danger.

The building where the body was found is known for good security and not allowing people inside who don’t have the proper Yale employee or student identification.

ARCHIVE June 2008:  New Clues in Yale Student Murder

City, Yale Learned From Jovin In Annie Le Case

Every Monday, “cold case” investigators gather to reexamine Suzanne Jovin’s unsolved 1998 murder and the paltry, mishandled evidence.

Meanwhile, a week after Annie Le was murdered, cops have closed in on a suspect while they await lab results on bloody clothing found at the scene.

Both gruesome murders involved Yale students. Both shocked the city. Both brought the national press streaming into town. Rick Levin presided over Yale then and now; his university secretary, Linda Lorimer, oversaw the crisis response. The city’s mayor, then as now, was John DeStefano; the top state prosecutor on the case, Mike Dearington.

The similarities end there.  Read More here

ARCHIVE June 2008:  New Clues in Yale Student Murder:    The Law

It's been nearly 10 years since Suzanne Jovin was stabbed to death near Yale University's campus, but investigators are still releasing new clues in the case.

The team of retired detectives looking into Jovin's murder is now re-examining an old lead in the case and has circulated a sketch of a man seen running near the place her body was found.

On Dec. 4, 1998, Jovin, a 21-year-old senior from Goettingen, Germany, was stabbed 17 times in the back and neck, with some defensive wounds on her arms, just a little more than a mile from the school's campus.

Her body was discovered in a residential area almost immediately following the attack after nearby residents reported hearing screams. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and pronounced dead in the emergency room later that night.  Read full story here
