HIGHLIGHTS:  John O Quinn, Attorney, Killed in Car Accident

Associated Press: HOUSTON — Flamboyant Houston lawyer John O’Quinn, who won billions in verdicts against makers of breast implants, pharmaceuticals and tobacco products, died Thursday in a traffic wreck. He was 68.

O’Quinn was one of two people killed when police say a sport-utility vehicle skidded across the median of a rain-slicked parkway just outside downtown Houston, went airborne and slammed into a tree.

“Certainly the roads being slick could have had something to do with it,” Houston Police Lt. L.J. Satterwhite said. “It’s a very preliminary investigation. It will take some time to figure out exactly what happened,”

Police spokesman Kese Smith said neither O’Quinn, who was driving, nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the passenger only as Johnny Cutliff.

O’Quinn’s accomplishments have not been without controversy

“The precise speed is not yet known,” Smith said. “That will be determined after reconstruction of the accident and further investigation. However, witnesses reported the vehicle traveling between 50 and 60 mph.”

The speed limit in the area is 40 mph. A drizzle was falling about 8 a.m. when the wreck occurred.  Read full story here
