Nelly Furtado Mi Plan Latin Makeover

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Mainstream music might traditionally stick to formula but that has never dissuaded Nelly Furtado from stirring up her own special recipes. Beneath her toothsomely pretty melodies, there has always been something charmingly off-kilter about Furtado, from the gung-ho mash-up of r’*'b, hip hop and folk balladry that marked her 2000 debut Whoa, Nelly! to her eccentric live shows (her last British tour saw her drop-kicking footballs into the audience).

In 2006, her third album, Loose, became a pop benchmark: a fruitful collaboration with Timbaland, yielding several hits including Maneater, Promiscuous and All Good Things. Following that comfortable success, her latest move initially seems like commercial kamikaze: new album Mi Plan is unadulterated Latin pop, sung entirely in Spanish. How on earth will that make the Radio 1 A-list? As far as Furtado is concerned, this isn’t such a crazy leap in the dark after all. Read full story here

Nelly Furtado: Mi Plan – Bajo Otra Luz

Mi Plan is actually a joint venture with Furtado’s major label; its conception was independent, right down to the headstrong title (literally, ‘My Plan’). Its groundwork included Furtado’s Spanish contribution to the soundtrack of Jennifer Lopez’s film El Cantante (interestingly, Lopez herself released a Latin pop album that bombed in Britain). Latin music is still treated as a specialist niche in Britain; even Colombian starlets such as Shakira howl through their hits in English. Yet Furtado regards Mi Plan as more of a learning experience than a risk.
