Breaking News:  Michael Scott’s body found in the river

The body discovered floating in the Chicago River near Merchandise Mart this morning is believed to be that of Chicago Public Schools Board President Michael Scott, police said.

Police have not positively identified the man, but Scott’s Cadillac was found nearby and Scott’s family had reported him missing earlier in the day.

Recently, Scott made news when he was subpoenaed to testify before a  federal grand jury looking into the admissions practices of Chicago’s elite schools.

Scott was also under scrutny in the past few months over Olympics related  real estate dealings.

Police are investigating the death, but no details have been released this morning.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson was on the scene early, saying that people have been calling him in tears all morning.

“I’m stunned,” he said. “Michael was so effervescent. [He] always had a capacity to solve problems, that’s why people leaned on him. Everyone felt Michael was their guy.”

Despite the lack of identification, Cook County Board President Todd Stroger issued a statement about Scott’s alleged death.  Read full story here

Cops: Body found in river tentatively ID’d as school board chief

A body tentatively identified as Michael Scott, president of the Chicago Board of Education, was found in the Chicago River near the Merchandise Mart this morning, police sources said.

A blue Cadillac registered to Scott, 60, was found parked next to a trash bin yards away from the river.

A police spokesman said the identification was preliminary. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not yet positively identified the body. Read full story here
