BEAUFORT, S.C. — Officials say an alligator bit off part of a golfer’s arm as he leaned over to pick up his ball at a private South Carolina course.

The man, who is in his 70s, was retrieving his ball from a pond when the 10-foot alligator bit him at Ocean Creek Golf Course in Beaufort County. The gator pulled the golfer into the pond and ripped off his arm in the struggle. His golf partners were able to free him.

Wildlife workers killed the alligator and retrieved the arm in the hopes it might be reattached.

The man has not been identified. He was being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina, but officials there would not release any information about him.

WASHINGTON – Vice President Joe Biden says a Republican congressman’s outburst during President Barack Obama’s health-care speech Wednesday night “demeaned the institution.”

South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson shouted “You lie” after Obama said extending health care to all Americans would not mean insuring illegal immigrants.

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, a fellow South Carolinian, said Wilson’s heckling was more damaging to South Carolina’s reputation than the exploits of Republican Governor . Mark Sanford, who admitted to having an extramarital affair with an Argentinian woman.  Read more here

South Carolina can’t close the deal

CNN News Report:  South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford forcefully rejected his lieutenant governor’s request that he resign for the good of the state Wednesday.

“I am not going to be railroaded out of this office by political opponents or folks that were never fans of mine in the first place,” Sanford told reporters.

The governor called a news conference to respond to Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who said earlier in the day “that the best interests of the people of South Carolina can no longer be served by the current administration.” Bauer also promised voters that if Sanford resigns and he assumes the governorship, he will not go through with his long-held plans to enter the 2010 governor’s race.

But Sanford dismissed Bauer’s offer — made formally in a letter sent to Sanford’s office — and accused Bauer and other critics of cynically trying to exploit his weakened political position after recent investigations into his travel expenses.

“A lot of what’s going on is pure politics, plain and simple,” he said.

Bauer and Sanford were elected separately to their offices, and they are not politically or personally close.  Read full story here
