COLLEGE FOOTBALL 2012 – A RECAP OF WEEK 10

If you are a true college football fan or just a fan of a certain team, yesterday you rode the emotional roller-coaster! Which one of the following emotions best describes your feelings?

a.) ecstasy and on cloud 9

b.) highly upset and scratching your head in bewilderment

c.) nervous, uncomfortable, worried sick

d.) drained and relieved

e.) all of the above

If you chose (e), then you must have watched Notre Dame versus Pitt, Kansas State vs. Oklahoma State, Oregon against USC, and LSU vs. Alabama. Yesterday once again proved why we love the game of college football so much and if those bumbling idiots called the NCAA would tweak the system to give us a true playoff, it would be the greatest sport of all!

Let’s start with Kansas State and Oklahoma State. That sickening thud you heard last night was the hearts of Wildcat nation hitting the turf as Heisman front runner Collin Klein went down with an injury in the third quarter. K State won in dominating fashion but we do not know the extent of Collin’s injury. Stay tuned….. If Collin can’t go next week at TCU, K State could be in trouble. The Big 8 has been wild this year and it will be a tall task for the Wildcats to come away with a win on the road. Could we see another BCS shakeup? Something tells me that Coach of the Year, Bill Snyder will have his team prepared! Kansas State is drooling for a match-up against Alabama, Oregon, or Notre Dame and it’s defense will stymie TCU. Doesn’t defense win championships?

Next gut-wrenching game is Oregon and USC. Watching this game was more like watching a US Open tennis match! Up and down, back and forth, and balls flying everywhere. My neck hurts from going side to side! In the end, Oregon amassed 730 yards of total offense to handle the Trojans. Kenjon Barner rushed through the porous Trojan defense for an astounding 321 yards and 5 touchdowns. Heisman hopeful QB Matt Barkley of USC did all he could as he passed for 484 yards and 4 touchdowns. Game, set, match – Oregon wins! After crushing weak opponent after weak opponent, Coach Phil Knight’s Nike hype machine finally faced a formidable team. With Stanford, Oregon State, and the PAC 10 championship game still ahead, are we getting closer to the “dream” match-up for the BCS National Championship game between Oregon and Alabama? The Ducks versus the Tide. Offense vs. defense. The offensive guru vs. the defensive guru. SEC vs. PAC 10. Sunflower yellow and lime green uniforms versus blood red uniforms. I am getting chills already! There is still a lot of football to be played. Stay tuned…..

You know the old saying, a cat has 9 lives. Well, how many lives do the Irish have? Notre Dame, coming off a HUGE win on the road in Norman last week looked lethargic for most of the day playing NOT to lose against the Pitt Panthers. Pitt, with nothing to play for, played like the Steelers. As we all know, it is very tough coming off an emotional win on the road to play at home the following week against a team that you are supposed to beat by 3 touchdowns. Coach Kelly and the Fighting Irish battled all game long and finally persevered in 3 OT’s to secure the victory. With upcoming win-able games against Boston College ( always a thorn in the Irish side ) and Wake Forest, the Irish cannot afford to look ahead to the season finale against their dreaded rival from the left coast, the hated Trojans. Win ’em all, and the Irish give themselves a chance to play for the BSC National Championship. Lose just one game and you are playing for a bowl game payday. How many more lives do the Irish have? Only time will tell.

Alabama and LSUdid the “Mad Hatter” have under that hat last night? Apparently, not a dang thing!! You have to feel sorry for Tiger nation as LSU played their hearts out last night only to have their coach make one bad decision after another. Asking a field goal kicker to attempt one far past his limit?? A fake punt?? A fake field goal?? An on side kick after you had just seized momentum?? I’m sorry, I do not usually criticize coaches, but it is time for the powers at LSU to make a coaching change. There is too much talent there, too many in state athletes, and too much money from it’s fan base, to allow this to continue any longer. Even Nick Saban said in an post game interview that the best team last night didn’t win. What’s that tell you? LSU was out coached…..again! The team that won the game was the team that was more prepared, better coached, and more disciplined. ‘Bama did not flinch when the game was on the line. They acted like they had been there before, managed the clock to perfection, and sucked the life out of the LSU faithful and the night game mystique of Tiger Stadium. LSU QB Zach Mettenberger had been criticized all year long but last night, he turned in the best performance of his young career. We need to add a column to his stat line – dropped balls. This problem has plagued the Tiger wide receivers all year long and last night was no different. At the end of the day, the LSU decision makers need to open up their pocketbooks and terminate Les Miles. Then, they need to jump on their private jet and TOUCHDOWN in Boise, Idaho. Chris Peterson is one of the top 5 coaches in America and it would be scary good to see the things HE could do with all of that talent in the Bayou State. Think ‘Bama nation would be worried if that were to happen?

Once again, we are loaded with great games and there is so much riding on each and every one of them. How does Alabama respond after their slugfest with LSU as they face Johnny Football and the red hot Aggies? Will K State overcome the loss of star QB Collin Klein? Does ND take care of business and pummel hapless BC? Do the Tigers of LSU line up and smash Miss. State? Does Beamer Ball have a trick up his sleeve for FSU?

Hope you got a chance to see the out pouring of love in Columbia, S.C. on Monday as the Gamecock faithful had a celebration for Marcus Lattimore as he turned 21. Too bad he couldn’t be there for his birthday party but he is still in the hospital recovering from yet another devastating knee injury. We can only hope that one day, Marcus will be running wild all over Williams Brice Stadium again!
